Dear Readers
For the longest time, I've wanted to make a book blog, but I was always daunted by the task of starting it. Truth be told, I've thought about making this blog since January 2021, but I never felt like I had the perfect first post. The longer I put it off, the more books I read, and the more I read, the more I longed to let people know what I was reading. My friends already indulge me as I give them play by plays of some of the worst things I've laid my eyes and ears on, but I want to talk about more than the bad. I aim for this space to be a place where I may talk about books, as well as broader topics relating to writing as they interest me.
Reading has been apart of my life for as far as I can remember. Neither of my parents were big readers, but my dad would regularly take me to the library. I was rather fortunate in that respect - while we never had much in the way of disposable income, I always had access to books through the library. I was always that kid who had his nose in a book, the one who would finish the assigned class book within the week, the one who would check out stacks of books nearly half his size. I also liked to write, and it's a hobby I'm slowly, but surely returning to. One thing I've realized over the past few years though is that more than writing myself, I like writing about other people's writing.
But maybe I'm getting ahead of myself. After all, who am I? You may call me memoria, named after the Wolf 359 episode of the same name. Keen listeners might have noticed that my blog url is also a reference to the red dwarf star that the station orbits around, as well as a pun on the words red/read. Were you to ask me what my favourite book is, I would be hardpressed to give you an answer. After all, do I speak of the books that first got me into reading? Or do I shout from the rooftops about a niche middle grade series that has haunted me for well over a decade now? Or do I speak of recent favourites, the ones that have made me reassess my relationship to my writing? No, I will not speak of my favourite books - at least not in this post. However, I can say some things about my reading tastes. As you might have guessed by now, I love science fiction. I'm also a huge fan of experimental fiction, "weird" fiction, and anything that delves into themes of memory.
Whether you're a lifelong reader like I am, or someone who is trying to read more, I hope you'll join me through my reading journey.
Signing off, memoria
P.S: I wrote this draft in 2024. While I can spend my hours lamenting on how long it has taken me to get started, I'm going to take the leap of faith and press "Publish" today!
